alyssakorea replied to your post “Ummm legit Aussie accents?”

the girl at the hotel in the episode seemed pretty legit to me (although bitchy)

I agree. Australia isn’t renowned for it’s customer service, especially in comparison to a country like Japan. And I can totally imagine and have in fact, heard a very similar curt tone being used before. Especially when employees are dealing with people who aren’t fluent in english.

In fact, that kind of tone was so familiar that I was very impressed with kyoani. I like to believe that maybe the kyoani staff suffered a similar mishap and were so shocked by how rudely they were treated that they suffered some sort of culture shock and found it necessary to implement that into the Aussie episode. Not because I think they wanted to portray Australia in a negative light, but because I think they wanted to accurately portray the Aussie culture. That’s what I’d like to assume anyway.

I love Australia, but having visited Japan multiple times, I am always amazed at the level of customer service they offer, and I won’t deny that we fall short in that category. In fact, I think most countries do. But of course, I am generalising here.

Anyway, why am I rambling on about this… haha. Props to kyoani for their research and attention to detail regarding Australia! Those accents were super strong, but still good enough to pass as aussie if you ask me!
